ChemMasters Inc. Product Release: All in One Cure & Seal for Broom Finished or Hand Troweled Concrete Introduced

July 25, 2013

MADISON, OH - July 24, 2013 -ChemMasters, Inc. has introduced a new concrete cure and seal product for use on driveways, garage floors and sidewalks. SilencureT SRT significantly simplifies the contractor's job by providing a curing compound and penetrating siloxane sealer in a single product which can be applied on broom finished, precast, hand or machine troweled surfaces. SilencureT SRT works effectively on newly placed concrete and can also be used on older unsealed concrete. Because it can be applied to fresh concrete, it eliminates the need for water or resin curing, stripping and the traditional 30 day waiting period before a silane or siloxane treatment, greatly reducing labor as well as visits to the jobsite. Silencure SRT represents an advanced curing and penetrating sealer technology which can be used on a most concrete finishes, making it easier, faster and less costly to cure concrete and provide long lasting protection against damage from freeze/thaw cycling and deicing chemicals. all in one application. It is a patented product that utilizes a pure acrylic copolymer compound for curing combined with a penetrating siloxane sealer. When applied to newly-placed concrete, it produces a non-yellowing clear continuous film, which effectively cures fresh concrete while providing a tough protective acrylic film to the surface. Additionally, Silencure SRT contains a proprietary blend of siloxanes which penetrate capillary pores of fresh concrete to form a silicone matrix which effectively prevents water and salt penetration. ChemMasters' water-based Solvent Replacement Technology (SRT) provides additional environmental benefits, is VOC compliant and virtually trouble-free. Silencure SRT cures concrete to ASTM C-309 and ASTM C-1315 standards, exceeds NCHRP 244 standards for salt protection and will exceed 100 freeze / thaw cycles without damage. TRA Snow and Sun Announces Release of New Gutter Bracket

July 22, 2013

TRA Snow and Sun’s new Gutter Bracket for half-round gutters is available in a variety of colors, sizes and quantities to help the contractors who install this European-style gutter. American Fork, UT, July 18, 2013 TRA Snow and Sun owner, Terry Anderson, began his business over 25 years ago using European ideas about roof snow retention, then bringing the time-tested concepts to the United States. Again, Europe has impacted Anderson’s business as his company has designed and now announces the Gutter Bracket to support European style half-round gutters. Standard American gutters are half rectangle, or box shaped. The European style, which is being used more often on American high- end homes and resort areas, is half-round. These half-round gutters require a half-round bracket attachment to mount the gutter to the fascia. Standard box type gutter attachments will not work. During a recent trip, Anderson met many contractors who had to order their Gutter Brackets all the way from Europe. When these snow retention customers complained about the expense of shipping from Europe, the limited colors offered, and the high quantities that were required to buy, Anderson responded with a “can-do” attitude. In a short period of time the first TRA Snow and Sun Gutter Bracket was designed, manufactured and shipped. Terry Anderson’s innovative and thoughtful approach to solving customers’ problems has been a key factor in the success of his company, TRA Snow and Sun, over the years. He and his staff are always willing to design and create products that will do a better job of meeting their customers’ needs, keeping in mind the importance of proper engineering and safety. In the case of the Gutter Bracket, all it took was a contractor telling him about the problem. More products are in the design stage and will be announced soon. TRA Snow and Sun, Inc., located in American Fork, Utah, offers Roof Snow Retention Devices, Solar Racking Systems and Roof Ventilation and Flashing Solutions. They provide all customers, from the individual homeowner to the big developer, free engineered designs for all their systems

Saint-Gobain Provides SageGlass Electronically Tintable Dynamic Glass for Dow Corning’s New Facility in Belgium

July 18, 2013

MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dow Corning has used SageGlass® tintable glazings in its extension of the Solar Energy Exploration and Development (SEED) centre, a state-of-the-art research and development facility in Seneffe, Belgium. This will provide a dynamic and comfortable sustainable glazing solution and help achieve the highest energy efficiency standards, says Mr. Francis Sputael, project manager of the SEED’s extension. The SEED centre, designed by architect Patrick de Grave from EARCH Engineering and design office, showcases Dow Corning silicones solutions for green buildings, sustainable design and green technologies, and must therefore promote insulating and sustainable architecture while providing an energy-efficient and comfortable working space for occupants. Located on a bridge between two newly-constructed buildings – the Solar Application Centre and the Innovation Technology Centre – the complex required an aesthetically-pleasing transparent glazing solution to control solar light, heat gain and glare. SageGlass is electronically tintable dynamic glass that maximizes daylight and outdoor views in the building while controlling glare and heat gain without using internal or external shading. The glass can darken or clear manually or automatically to save energy and help keep building occupants continuously comfortable throughout the day. SageGlass was installed into the SEED centre as structural glazing using Dow Corning silicones. The windows are managed by the SageGlass control system in two automatic switching zones. Depending on the solar exposure of the façade, which is monitored by light sensors, the glass darkens or clears to take full advantage of daylight and prevent solar heat gain. Thanks to a presence detector and light level sensors, artificial lights are switched on and off automatically to maximize energy efficiency. Installing SageGlass also enabled the SEED centre to make the most of the entire meeting room without the challenge of internal shading solutions taking up valuable space.

LP Building Products Launches New LP® SolidGuard™ LSL

July 11, 2013

NASHVILLE, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--LP Building Products has announced the launch of its new LP® SolidGuard™ LSL, adding protection against termite damage and fungal decay to its LSL product. As the industry embraces wood framing in taller multifamily structures, this new product provides a treated sill plate solution to help eliminate shrinkage. Using LSL wall plates and sill plates can help eliminate plate shrinkage. “The moisture levels of our product are carefully controlled throughout the manufacturing process, giving all LP SolidGuard and SolidStart LSL products a 7 to 10 percent moisture content, similar to the moisture equilibrium inside the building, meaning that there’s no moisture level to which our product has to dry down.” LP SolidGuard LSL is treated with zinc borate for fungal decay and termite resistance. LP SolidGuard LSL framing materials are intended for use in aboveground protected applications such as sill plates, columns, rim board and studs. The product is not intended for ground contact or continuous exposure to weather, nor can it be substituted for treated studs in a permanent wood foundation. The zinc borate is blended into the LSL, eliminating the need for field treatment of cut ends. The product requires no special handling or disposal as borate is a naturally occurring mineral that is odorless and colorless in wood. LP SolidGuard LSL is available in longer lengths than traditional lumber, and its manufacturing process provides a uniform cure and even density gradient across the thickness of the product, adding to its strength and making it more resistant to warping, shrinking and twisting.

Design Competition: Library of the Future

July 11, 2013

The neighborhood library of the future will, undoubtedly, be a facility that is quite different from today’s library. Ebooks, the internet, future technology will all have an effect on the physical form that the library takes. Will there be hard copy books available to lend or just ebooks? Does the neighborhood library even have a place in the neighborhood if there are fewer hard copy books available? Will the facility be smaller due to the elimination of stacks of books and, if so, what functions will take the place of the stacks. The roles libraries play in the life of a neighborhood will evolve over time to provide a new and altered service to the public. What will those services be and into what physical form will the library morph to serve the community? the competition, phase 1: a program for designing a neighborhood library of the future. The competition, phase 2: design of a neighborhood library of the future using the winning program from phase 1. All entrants may enter either or both of the competition phases. MVRDV win Competition in Emmen, Switzerland with Urban Hybrid

July 11, 2013

The city of Emmen has announced that investment corporation Senn BPM AG together with MVRDV are the winners of the Feldbreite competition for a housing block with 95 homes of 16 different types. The urban hybrid development combines characteristics of city dwelling – central location, privacy, underground parking – with the characteristics of suburban life: gardens, multilevel living and a neighbourhood community. Construction is envisioned to start in 2015. Instead of the housing block asked for by the brief, MVRDV created a mixed urban block with small apartment buildings at the corners, townhouses along the streets and garden and patio houses inside the block. The 16 different housing types, which vary in size from 30 to 130 m2 and from one to four floors, will naturally attract a mixed group of inhabitants, an important factor in creating a vivid urban environment. The project consists of 9000 m2 of housing, 2034 m2 services and 2925 m2 underground parking. Each house or apartment will have its own façade colour, emphasizing its individual ownership. A pastel range of colour was chosen based on the specific colours traditionally found in historic Swiss town centres in the Lucerne area, such as Beromünster. An important aspect of the project is the high quality of construction in combination with relatively low prices. Clients will be able to buy a more or less finished house – comparable to the basic model of a new car – with options leading up to almost full fit and finish possible. Home owners with little money can therefore delay investment, or do the work themselves, and still live in a high quality, new build home. The exterior of the block is a varied urban street front whilst the interior offers the quality of a green and intimate village. The interior of the block is divided into both private and public spaces, with dividing walls used to hang tables or benches and parts of the walls which can be rotated and used for table tennis. A cohesive landscaping plan foresees a wide variety of fruit trees in the courtyard, in both the private and public areas. The garden and patio houses in the centre of the courtyard have their own entrance doors at the outer perimeter of the block. The roofs will be used for additional outdoor space. MVRDV won the developer’s competition together with development corporation Senn BPM AG, Fontana Landscape architects and Wüest & Partner real estate consulting.

All About Hydrophobic Waterstop + HDPE & NSF

July 10, 2013

Adapted from "The Little Book of Waterstop" When most engineers or contractors think of a “waterstop” what they’re generally referring to is a 50-foot long section of a flexible, water-proof material (usually plastic or rubber), six to nine inches wide, and installed along the concrete joint in between the formwork. This waterstop is more accurately defined as a hydrophobic waterstop: A waterstop designed to prevent the passage of fluids by repelling them along and away from the waterstop product, and creating an internal dam at and along the concrete joint. Hydrophobicity is the amount of water repulsion of the surface of the waterstop, and can actually be measured: Place a drop of water on the flat side of the waterstop to be tested and measure the relief angle of the water drop. The sharper the angle the more hydrophobic the waterstop material is. An angle 90 degrees or greater makes the waterstop truly hydrophobic and this product will actively move fluids along the joint and away from the source. A waterstop that will perform well must have adequate strength and extensibility to avoid be torn or ruptured by joint movement. The best waterstop products are able to maintain these properties (high tensile strength, good elongation [ASTM D-412]) when exposed to the installed environment for the service life of the structure. Exposure conditions which could affect a waterstop’s service life are: • Temperature • UV exposure • Ozone exposure • Chemical attack Because hydrophobic waterstops act as dams at the concrete joint, a general rule of thumb is the greater the size of a waterstop (waterstop size is actually it’s width, e.g. 4”, 6”, 9”, etc.), the greater the head pressure the waterstop will resist. A small 4” waterstop is more than suitable for a containment wall surrounding a tank farm, or even a swimming pool in a back yard, but would be completely inappropriate for the foot of a large dam. Giant concrete structures such as dams or locks will require 9” wide waterstops or greater. It’s not just width (size) that effects waterstop performance, thickness also plays an important role. Just like conventional dams, the thicker waterstops are able to resist higher head pressures of water (or other aqueous fluids). Because proper installation plays such a critical part in the effectiveness of a given waterstop system, the very best waterstops are those that can be fused and fabricated easily. For this reason, the majority of today’s design engineers specify and require thermoplastic waterstops (such as PVC or TPV), and not the earlier thermoset varieties (neoprene, SBR, natural rubber). Thermoplastic materials have the ability to be easily field fabricated for simple change of directions and the joining of straight lengths; whereas, the earlier thermoset rubber materials generally were ineffectively glued and clamped together causing a severe weakness in the waterstop diaphragm and leaking. A waterstop’s cross-sectional area is called its profile, and there are lots of profiles to choose from, but really they all share the same basic anatomy (which is illustrated in the next section): a series of fins or bulbs to provide interlock with the concrete, the body or web to provide the necessary rigidity and product width, and possibly a hollow cavity or bulb to enable the waterstop with additional movement properties. By far, the largest difference between various waterstops on the market today are the polymers they are constructed of, and the services offered by various manufacturer’s. This book will cover modern polymers at length, but it is up to the individual designer to find a manufacturer that offers the desired set of services and support for their project. These after-sale services and support are truly what separates a great manufactured waterstop from a poor one and I will leave this one important consideration to the reader. Just remember, “Choose wisely.” A waterstop is permanently installed in concrete (much like rebar) and there really are no second chances to get it right.

Ultra Series Tilt-Turn Windows European Functionality meets American Style.

July 03, 2013

The Ultra Series tilt-turn is a versatile window that combines American flush-to-frame design with European functionality. With the simple turn of a handle, this dual-action product can: • Operate like a hopper window by tilting in with the opening at the top for ventilation • Operate like an inswing casement for greater ventilation, access, and easy cleaning Ultra Series tilt-turn windows have three layers of weatherstripping for optimal performance and a tight seal in even the most extreme climates. As standard, the aluminum exterior jamb is 4-9/16", however options are available. Flexible Operation A variety of functional options are available to customize the unit operation to specific needs: • Tilt-before-turn as standard • Turn-before-tilt • Turn-only (inswing) • Tilt-only • Hopper (inswing with opening at the top) Hardware Options Tilt-turns feature modern, streamlined handles in these colors: • Rustic Umber (standard) • White (option) • Black (option, shown) Handles are centered vertically on the sash stiles as standard. However, custom placement may be requested for design flexibility or operational convenience. Note that on the "hopper unit" shown above, the handle is below-center to align with the handles on either side. As standard, tilt-turn windows do not lock. Keyed handles are available, however. Additionally, for tilt-first windows, there is a tilt-only option which allows the unit to be "locked" so it is restriced to tilt operation. It must be "unlocked" to restore its turn functionality. Matching Units Stationary transom, picture, and direct sets units are available to match venting tilt-turns.
