  • Architectural coatings not only improve the appearance of a structure but offer protection from the elements. Coatings are available in powder and liquid formulas and while there are differences between the two delivery methods, equivalent weathering systems are available in both. The most commonly used performance specifications for coatings are established by the American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA), with AAMA 2605 being the highest standard. Various testing procedures measure coatings according to AAMA standards. Using formulations that perform according to the appropriate standard for a coating’s application will optimize the service-life of the finish while controlling costs.

  • This course is designed to provide an introduction to acoustics and will highlight the link between acoustics and the architects vision for a space at the design phase. Understanding how sound travels in buildings is crucial to creating a smart and acoustically sound environment. Architects and building owners invest heavily into designing aesthetics and functionality into a building that represents their vision for its use. However, poor acoustics can disrupt and distract occupants from the architects’ vision for a space. Understanding how sound travels in buildings and how it interacts with various surfaces will provide the knowledge needed to avoid acoustical issues when designing a space. In the event that the building is already experiencing issues, strategies for remediating the issues will also be discussed.

Although these ratings are required by building codes and frequently used, they are still often poorly understood and there are many myths and misconceptions around their use. This course looks “under the hood” of the STC and IIC ratings to get a better understanding of what they are, how they work, and what they do and don’t tell us. Importantly, this course covers shortcomings of the STC and IIC ratings that if not understood can lead to poor designs for noise control. In that vein, this course also looks at two new acoustic ratings, HIIC and LIIC, that provide a better insight into the impact-noise reduction provided by floor/ceiling assemblies. Finally, the course uses the knowledge gained about ratings to discuss general methods of improving the acoustic performance of floor/ceiling assemblies.

  • Partitions used for sound isolation are often required to also provide fire resistance. This is especially true in multi-family construction where the vast majority of unit demising walls and floor/ceiling assemblies must be fire rated. Solid working knowledge of fire-resistive designs is essential for architects to design acoustic partitions that can actually be built on-site. There are many design elements that work well for fire and for acoustics, but there are also areas where what works well for fire can be at odds with what works well for acoustics. In this presentation, we will look at the elements of acoustic and fire design both for basic wall and floor/ceiling assemblies and for design details like wall-wall and wall-ceiling intersections

  • Designers, owners, and occupants all value the appeal of natural brick and wood for exterior cladding and interior surfaces. But these natural materials come with drawbacks. Wood can split, warp, cup, mold, and attract insects. Brick is heavy and susceptible to efflorescence. Quality control is not assured. The fresh alternative is resin cast shapes that mimic wood and brick, delivering the benefits of biophilia and a sense of connection with the natural world, but without the problems. This course examines the wood and brick aesthetic of resin cast shapes and demonstrates their sustainability and performance qualities. They are durable, lightweight, easy to install, and contribute to a continuous building envelope. Case studies of noteworthy projects illustrate the superior form and function of this next-level cladding alternative.
