  • The design community has become increasingly focused on ensuring that the products and places they create suit the diverse needs and differing abilities of everyone. This course explores how universal design principles and products can inform design to create places that are safer, more comfortable, visually appealing, and usable and that provide a richer experience for all users. This exploration utilizes the examples of door hardware and the needs of a diverse group of users including senior citizens and others to explain some of these principles and provides a detailed examination of a universally designed door latch.

  • This course reviews the color trends forecast for the year 2021. In a time of global uncertainty and rapid change, color themes are complex and contradictory, reflecting a yearning for comfort and authenticity, but also for change. Seeking a balance between these impulses, colors are warmer and deeper than last year, but with splashes of intense, synthetic brights. The impact of COVID-19 on the paint industry is examined.

  • Ensuring a building’s roof is waterproof, on top of being structurally sound, is critical to the success of any building project. This course examines rapid curing, polymeric liquid-applied waterproofing membranes for roofing and other demanding applications. Discussions include the history of PMMA, PMMA system components and characteristics, the installation process, and the versatility of PMMA products.

  • The tools, techniques, and approaches to Sustainable Community Planning (SCP) have evolved substantially in the last few decades, turning it from an abstract notion into a comprehensive and beneficial planning approach.   • Fireplaces have long been a centerpiece in the home. This course presents an introduction to the types of gas fireplaces and vents, and covers the applicable code and standards for direct-vent, factory-built gas fireplaces. Also included are discussions on the protective safety barrier requirements, test methods for fireplace efficiency, and typical steps for installing direct-vent gas fireplaces and barriers.

  • Their cost, flexibility, and relative ease of installation are just a few of the reasons that single-ply roofing membranes have seen a growth in popularity over the years. With a focus on commercial roofing systems, this course explores the drawbacks of traditional asphaltic roofing as well as the advantages and disadvantages of single-ply roofing systems and their attachment technologies.

  • The design of laser-cut steel, thermally broken windows and doors was fueled by the need to produce a steel window and door that would meet the ever increasingly stringent energy efficiency building codes of today and tomorrow, while not losing any of the “classic-timeless” aesthetics that steel windows and doors have become known for. This course examines the fabrication, thermal performance, and design and finish options of steel windows and doors.

  • The commercial space design trend toward open plans has had a major impact on interior electrical and digital infrastructure. Offices, hotels, retail spaces, and transit areas all utilize open spaces, each with their own specific issues and requirements.   • Textile air dispersion systems have come a long way from the days of cotton diffusers and duct socks. Today's systems are custom engineered and constructed from advanced polyester fabrics that offer features and capabilities not possible with other air distribution systems. This course examines the similarities and differences between metal and fabric systems and highlights the design, performance, efficiency, and sustainability characteristics unique to textile air dispersion. As well, the wide-ranging application possibilities for textile systems are explored.

  • Comprehensive paint specifications define minimum quality levels and the materials and methods required to achieve them. This introductory course reviews paint specification types/formats, key performance and application standards, key variables addressed by paint specs, general product recommendations, and paint submittals.

  • Fixed access ladders are a part of almost all commercial buildings, and yet their design and installation is often ignored or forgotten until the last stage of building inspection. An improperly designed and installed ladder can lead to safety concerns for the building's occupants. This course reviews different types of fixed access ladders and the corresponding safety codes and standards that ensure users' welfare. Ladder design features and materials required for safe fabrication and installation are discussed and various case studies are examined.

  • Insulated metal panels (IMPs) provide a sustainable and energy-efficient insulation option for architects and building owners. These lightweight, durable, easy-to-install panels are an all-in-one product acting as insulation as well as an air and vapor barrier. This course explains how IMPs are an effective thermal barrier and discusses their application in new and retrofit construction.
