  • Water quality is a priority in most watersheds and treatment trains have become an effective strategy to target multiple pollutants of concern to reach effluent water quality objectives. This presentation will discuss the water quality benefits of using permeable pavers and discuss the efficacy of permeable paver systems for these pollutants of concern: Total Suspended Solids; Nutrients; Hydrocarbons; and Heavy Metals and provide research references to validate the removal efficiencies. Permeable pavers can also be used in series with other water quality controls, typically called a treatment train, to provide high levels of pollutant removal. This presentation will discuss using permeable pavers with bioretention, green roofs, vegetated filter strips, and manufactured water quality devices. Join us for an overview of the water quality benefits of permeable pavers and learn how to leverage the power of a treatment train to meet or exceed regulatory water quality requirements.

  • Healthy hydration is central to the health of patients and to hospitals. There are three hydration issues facing hospitals. First, nurses are not properly hydrated. This affects their mental acuity which can negatively affect job performance including patient safety. The course explores how to make water more accessible in ways that increase mental health and gives respite to nurses. Second, hospitals are embracing community health initiatives. This course looks at how supplying lead-free water at hospitals supports healthy communities. And, third hospitals are stepping up their commitment to green and sustainable operations. This course dives into how hospitals can reduce plastic usage through filtered water delivery units.

  • CO2 emissions from healthcare in the world's largest economies account for about 5% of their national carbon footprints.

Increasingly, leading health organizations are looking to decarbonize facilities, improving health outcomes and reducing utility costs. The presentation integrates architecture and building engineering aspects of the process to reduce carbon in facilities, including both operational and embodied carbon. Key principles begin with designing for the patient experience and thermal comfort. This approach focusses on managing peak solar loads, eliminating the need for air changes beyond minimum code required ACH. This model saves first costs, and creates flexibility for alternate comfort delivery systems, like chilled beams. Control systems that integrate process loads enable a new way to manage annual thermal resources. This is consistent with next generation central plants based on pumping energy like heat recovery chillers or ground source heat pumps. These plants provide a thermal regime consistent with chilled beams, enabling the lowest energy use outcomes. Design tools that architect and engineers share are demonstrated as part of a design methodology to achieve this paradigm.

  • This course covers two widely used acoustic metrics, the STC and IIC ratings. Although these ratings are required by building codes and frequently used, they are still often poorly understood and there are many myths and misconceptions around their use. This course looks “under the hood” of the STC and IIC ratings to get a better understanding of what they are, how they work, and what they do and don’t tell us. Importantly, this course covers shortcomings of the STC and IIC ratings that if not understood can lead to poor designs for noise control. In that vein, this course also looks at two new acoustic ratings, HIIC and LIIC, that provide a better insight into the impact-noise reduction provided by floor/ceiling assemblies. Finally, the course uses the knowledge gained about ratings to discuss general methods of improving the acoustic performance of floor/ceiling assemblies.

  • Rapidly changing trends in our society, such as urbanization and modern lifestyle, have resulted in isolation of humans from our experiences within nature. Early research has shown that psychological effects of biophilic design on noise perception have a significant influence in the well-being and health such as focus, information retention, productivity and creativity. In this course, we will identify these potential problems and the effects of them; as well as outline different corrective actions to mitigate/lessen the issues.

  • Partitions used for sound isolation are often required to also provide fire resistance. This is especially true in multi-family construction where the vast majority of unit demising walls and floor/ceiling assemblies must be fire rated. Solid working knowledge of fire-resistive designs is essential for architects to design acoustic partitions that can actually be built on-site. There are many design elements that work well for fire and for acoustics, but there are also areas where what works well for fire can be at odds with what works well for acoustics. In this presentation, we will look at the elements of acoustic and fire design both for basic wall and floor/ceiling assemblies and for design details like wall-wall and wall-ceiling intersections

With urban heat island effect compounding the global warming from climate change, we are in urgent need of understanding how the roof can be very effective in delivering sustainable, high performance buildings while incorporating stormwater Best Management Practices (BMPs). Smart material choices and quality and environmental performance certifications are part of assuring performance meets design intent. In addition, job site pain points and project insights for maximizing building design performance will be shared.
